Using AI Agents for Cybersecurity: Where They Help and Where They Fail
I have been putting AI agents into security workflows for a while. They are genuinely useful in some places and actively harmful in others. Here is the split as I have found it.
Where they help
- Recon and data gathering: pulling together information from many sources, faster than doing it by hand
- First-pass analysis: reading logs, configs or scanner output and pointing at what looks interesting
- Explaining unfamiliar things: a tool's output, a protocol, a piece of code
- Drafting: turning real findings into a first version of a report
The common thread is that a human checks the result, and the cost of a mistake at that stage is low.
Where they fail
- Confident wrong answers: an agent will state a fabricated CVE number or a made-up config detail in the same tone as a real one
- Missing context: it does not know your environment, your risk tolerance, or what is out of scope unless you tell it every single time
- Verification: it is bad at checking its own work, and asking it to usually just produces a confident "looks correct"
- Anything final: a decision made only by an agent is a decision that nobody actually made
How I use them safely
- Agents gather and analyze. Humans verify and decide.
- Every factual claim has to trace to a source or a tool result
- Tools for anything that must be true, not model recall
- Keep the scope and the rules of engagement in front of the agent constantly
The honest summary
An AI agent is a fast, tireless junior researcher with no judgement and a habit of sounding certain. Used that way, with a person owning the verification and the decision, it is a real force multiplier. Used as an oracle, it will eventually hand you something false with total confidence, and in security that is expensive.
